These last few weeks at my new internship have been incredibly productive. During my second week at the station, I received a debrief from TS on the plan for the podcast we’re developing. The focus? The Secret Tunnels of Pensacola.

We started by reviewing a variety of articles TS uncovered in both school and city archives that reference the possible existence of these tunnels. Together, we’ve been building a storyboard and mapping out all the locations where these tunnels might have existed. We've cross-referenced mentions from newspaper archives, city records, and even Reddit threads. Gradually, we ruled out vague or unreliable leads, narrowing it down to a solid list of potential sites.

While TS visited these locations, I continued digging through the documents he compiled. Today, we explored one of the more intriguing leads — the Pensacola Lighthouse. A floor plan review had suggested there might be a tunnel underneath a hatch in the floor. With help from the tour guides, we climbed down through a hidden hatch into a subterranean room once used to hold water. Inside, we examined old cans and bottles, likely from the 1980s, which suggests the room hasn't been accessed in over 35 years.

Although we didn’t find a tunnel, we did spot a drill lodged into the wall where a tunnel entrance may have once been. It’s possible others had the same theory we did. Our next step is to wait for archaeologists to scan the area to determine whether that wall could be concealing a sealed-off tunnel.

Tomorrow, I’ll be working my second live radio concert. Fingers crossed it goes as smoothly as last month's!
